Chris Sutton names the only Celtic star in Brendan Rodgers' squad who can't be replaced

Normal service continues to resume for Celtic.

That was proven when Celtic brushed aside Ross County in the Premiership on Saturday, days after their efforts in the Champions League.

Many knew Brendan Rodgers would make changes to Celtic’s XI, he made six in total, and it resulted in one of the easiest wins of the season.

Last week, Celtic scored four second-half goals at Tynecastle, before putting five goals past County in the opening 45 minutes at Parkhead.

It’s an example of the power the Bhoys have within the squad and how the bench players are more than good enough to be regular starters.

Four of the players who scored at the weekend – Liam Scales, Luke McCowan, Paulo Bernardo and Adam Idah – were all brought into the side.

With captain Callum McGregor providing his magic from distance again, and he received his flowers from Chris Sutton and James McFadden.

From the outfield players, McGregor, Cameron Carter-Vickers, Daizen Maeda and Alistair Johnston were the only ones who kept their place from the last two matches.

Carter-Vickers was the only one who played the entire game, with the skipper playing an hour and then earning a much-needed rest.

McFadden lauded the retired Scotland international and the ‘incredible’ number of goals he is scoring from distance this season.

Sutton added and explained how he is the ‘one constant’ in the side, with no replacement for the man with the armband, as he told Sky Sports Football (01/12/24 at 11:10 am).

“It is (incredible the number of goals McGregor is scoring from outside of the box), it’s the goals he is scoring as well, they are outstanding goals, when you look at the way Celtic play and they try to have those penetrating passes, inside runs as you see with Luke McCowan,” said McFadden.

“But, when teams back off, sometimes you have to take a shot and Callum McGregor seems to picking the right moments and finding the back of the net as well.”

Sutton added: “He is the one constant, so you can change all those other positions. But there isn’t a replacement who can do it like McGregor.”

McGregor’s stats for Celtic

Last season, McGregor scored two goals in all competitions and he has already smashed that record, in fact, he is on track to match and beat his best goalscoring season ever.

In only three other seasons, McGregor has scored more, with his highest-goalscoring campaign coming in 2019/20 when he netted 13 and he is already nearly halfway there, as posted by Transfermarkt.

With more Champions League games coming up, including Celtic’s League Cup final against Rangers, this is the skipper’s chance to produce his best.
