Celtic are going from strength to strength this season under Brendan Rodgers whilst Rangers lurch from one disappointing result to another under Philippe Clement.
Unbeaten domestically, Celtic are sweeping all before them and are looking very good to pick up another treble this season.
Rangers on the other hand struggled against Motherwell in the League Cup semi-final and also dropped their 13th point of the season against Dundee United on Saturday.
After Celtic hammered Hearts, the Parkhead club are looking very strong heading into a crucial part of the season.
But that hasn’t stopped Ally McCoist from delivering his verdict on whether his old club can still challenge Celtic for the league title and win the League Cup at Hampden next month.
Ally McCoist ‘always positive’ about Celtic vs Rangers but with a caveat
Ally McCoist was heartbroken when Celtic beat Hearts and Rangers dropped points at Ibrox on Saturday as he seems to do a U-turn over how he rates the Ibrox club’s chances for the league and the Hampden final next month.
McCoist said on talkSPORT, “I’m always positive. Yeah. And you never say never but you’ve got to say the league looks far away from them, miles away from them.
“But strangely and bizarrely enough, I think the better performances have been in Europe so far this year. Great performance in Malmo. Very, very good performance in Greece in Athens and could have and should have won the game.
“So that’s been, I think, the better performances. They’ve got a League Cup final coming up against Celtic which is going to be a big ask because their record hasn’t been good.
“Can they win it? Of course, they can. It’s a Rangers/Celtic game. Anything can happen, but they’ll certainly start the second favourites.”
Everything a hurting Ally McCoist has said about Celtic this season
McCoist has talked about Celtic a lot this season as he sits on the sidelines watching his old team struggle to compete with the Scottish champions.
The former Rangers striker admitted that he ‘didn’t enjoy’ praising Celtic’s win over RB Leipzig last month after the Hoops’ super Parkhead comeback.
McCoist was also gutted at the news that international rapper Snoop Dogg wants to invest in Celtic as well.
Martin O’Neill’s comments on the gulf between Celtic and Rangers in October also left McCoist ‘in agony’ even though he admitted the legendary former Hoops boss was correct.
And finally, McCoist was left ‘devastated’ after Celtic beat Rangers in the first Glasgow Derby of the season to open up an early gap at the top of the league table.
It’s going to be a long old season for the former Scotland striker, especially if Celtic beat Rangers in the League Cup final in just over two week’s time.
