Kasper Schmeichel’s Denmark teammate Christian Eriksen has leapt to his defence following the recent backlash around his injury.
Schmeichel revealed he will be out for 10-12 months as he prepares to have surgery on a shoulder injury. The 39-year-old has been criticised by sections of the Hoops fanbase for playing on for so long.
Even Martin O’Neill admitted he was ‘surprised’ by Schmeichel’s revelation, but his Danish counterparts have come out in support.

Christian Eriksen sends message to Kasper Schmeichel
As the former Premier League winner prepares to spend a lengthy amount of time on the sidelines, Eriksen has admitted that it will be ‘strange’ not having him around for their World Cup play-off matches.
He said: “Kasper has done a lot for Denmark and he has meant a lot to Danish football for many years.
“So it’s of course a shame that he’s not there.

“It’s going to be felt. Both at the squad meetings and on the pitch.
“Kasper is going to have a small operation. Hopefully it goes well and he will be back soon.
“But it is definitely strange to be in the team without him after all those years.”
Kasper Schmeichel put country over club first
Playing on for so long with a niggle that has developed into a long-term issue is a direct consequence of the fact that Schmeichel wanted to play at the World Cup.
As he closes in on his 40th birthday, it isn’t hard to imagine that this would be his final opportunity as a player to compete in a major international competition for his country.

Instead of getting the problem fixed earlier and returning towards the back end of the season, he took a chance and it has backfired for everyone.
Nobody has won from this and now Schmeichel is unlikely to reach the milestone 1,000 appearances mark, as well as play again.
