‘Colossal’… Charlie Mulgrew in awe of Celtic star who has gone ‘under the radar’ this season

After beating Partick Thistle in the Premier Sports Cup, Celtic look like they are starting to find their groove.

It has been a bit of a stuttering start to the season in terms of playing style for Celtic despite being unbeaten domestically.

However, after Celtic saw off Partick Thistle in emphatic style, confidence will be high in Brendan Rodgers’ side, especially in defence.

Celtic have conceded just one goal this season after the Bhoys won 2-1 at Kilmarnock and former Parkhead hero Charlie Mulgrew reckons that is down to one defender who has been ‘colossal’ for Rodgers this season.

Charlie Mulgrew tells Brendan Rodgers Liam Scales is Celtic’s ‘best defender’

Liam Scales‘ career at Celtic has been a kind of fairytale. On his way out in 2023, the Irishman took advantage of an injury crisis and has been a key member of Rodgers’ first-team squad ever since.

And after watching Celtic produce another clean sheet, Mulgrew believes that the Hoops’ defensive record this season in mainly down to one man, Scales.

Mulgrew told The Go Radio Football Show [1h 4m 48s], “Yeah, he was good. I think he’s been brilliant this year. I think he’s been Celtic’s best defender.

“Carter Vickers is so steady and reliable, but I think Scales kind of goes under the radar. The amount of balls he heads in both boxes is so valuable against Rangers. I’ve spoken about how I think Rangers could have had a goal or two in the first half with the long throws and the balls in the box, but his head always seemed to be on it.

And then he scores a goal again yesterday. Great wee glance and header. And yeah, he’s been colossal for Celtic so far this season.”

What Brendan Rodgers thinks of Liam Scales at Celtic

Brendan Rodgers clearly rates Liam Scales very highly at Celtic. Since he returned to the club in the summer of 2023, the Hoops boss has played him 84 times not including this season.

Even when Celtic had a left-back crisis at the start of the season, Rodgers trusted Scales to slot in there as he slowly built up Kieran Tierney’s match fitness.

Despite splitting fan opinion, it’s clear Scales remains and will continue to be a crucial part of Celtic’s defence this season.
