Danish media react as Celtic goalkeeper Kasper Schmeichel concedes two in Denmark draw vs Switzerland

Kasper Schmeichel was on the receiving end of some harsh criticism this week after the Celtic goalkeeper’s mistake in Denmark’s defeat to Spain.

Normally reliable, Schmeichel failed to keep a long-range effort from Spain’s Martin Zubimendi out of the Denmark net and the Celtic goalkeeper was criticised in the Danish media for it.

However, Schmeichel didn’t have to wait too long to make amends as the Danes faced Switzerland in their next Nations League match.

Drawing the game 2-2, Schmeichel was let down by some poor defending by Gustav Isaksen for the Swiss opener and it seems that that is the view being shared by the Danish media this morning.

Celtic ‘keeper Schmeichel let down by Denmark defence

Schmeichel was given a rough ride by the Danish media for his blunder in Denmark’s defeat to Spain last week but it seems that all may be forgiven after his performance last night.

Sports outlet DR rated Schmeichel a 7/10 and said, “The Danish goalkeeper had only conceded one goal in the first three games in the pool, but at half-time, there were already two Swiss goals on the board.

“However, it was difficult to blame Schmeichel for any of the goals. Held on well to a couple of other finishes and also had two really good and chance-creating starts.”

Ekstrabladet rated Schmeichel 5/10 and said, “After the small blunder against Spain, it would have suited Denmark’s first keeper to get in the way of a Swiss penalty, but it didn’t turn out that way, and you can’t just expect that. He was at the mercy of the first goal.

BT unusually took aim at Schmeichel’s distribution, “Took centre stage in Saturday’s game with an errant intervention. There was none of that today, where he didn’t have much to do on the goals where the defence fell behind him. But we missed some more quality in those kick-outs. Where were they going?”

And finally, Tipsbladet also noticed an issue with the Celtic goalkeeper’s passing with a 3/5 and said, “Takes it as he should. Schmeichel could do nothing about the two Swiss goals.

“However, the kicks were not impressive, which often put teammates under pressure.”

Schmeichel’s Denmark performance as Celtic ‘keeper earns 107th cap

Fotmob rated Kasper Schmeichel’s performance in Denmark’s draw with the Swiss at 6.4. That rating seems fair considering the media say he didn’t have much to do and was not at fault for both goals.

In 90 minutes in Switzerland, the Celtic goalkeeper made one save, six ball recoveries and had 36 touches of the ball.

Schmeichel also made 32 passes with 75% of them reaching a Denmark teammate with eight out of 15 long balls finding their target.

Not the worst performance by Schmeichel but at least he returns to Celtic for the weekend match against Aberdeen in a more confident mood than he was after his display in Denmark’s defeat to Spain last week.
