David Murray has a warning about the 49ers trying to help Rangers catch Celtic

In the past week, many Celtic fans would have seen David Murray pop up on their screens after years of going into the wilderness.

The former Rangers owner hasn’t been seen since 2011, following the Ibrox club’s collapse, and is now out in public trying to sell his book.

Celtic have dominated Scottish football with very little answer during that period, and now, the San Francisco 49ers have entered the building.

With Russell Martin at the helm, Rangers are going to try to stop Celtic and Brendan Rodgers from winning Premiership title number 56 next season.

But they have a word of warning from a man who knows their club so well.

David Murray on Rangers’ San Francisco 49ers trying to catch Celtic

Rodgers has won four trophies since returning to Celtic Park during the summer of 2023, including narrowly missing out on the Treble last season.

Added to that, from 14 out of the last 15 seasons, it’s Celtic’s name that has been on top of the door, and Murray warned Rangers about how long it could take to even get close to Scotland’s most successful club.

Jim White asks: “What about today? Do you believe that Rangers have lost their Scottish identity, and they need to get it back? You think Celtic have got it. They have a Scottish captain in Callum McGregor. Do you want to see more Scottishness in Rangers?”

Murray responded: “Obviously, because they are a Scottish club. A lot of clubs have lost that. You need a Scottish core in Scotland, and Rangers seem to have lost that.

On the 49ers: “I think the fans will have to be patient. This won’t be a three-month plan. This will be a three-five-year plan. These are astute businessmen who will take the club to a base level.

“They are putting £20 million in. I don’t know where that £20 million is going to go. I wish them well. I am sure that they are shrewd business people. I don’t think it’s going to happen as quickly as people would hope.”

Celtic and Rangers’ trophies count since Murray’s exit in 2011

Not long after Murray’s official exit in 2011, Rangers dropped right down the divisions, and it took them a while to get back.

Of course, during that period, Celtic were cleaning house, but even since the Gers’ return, the famous green and white have won more Trebles than they have league titles.

It has been utter dominance of the highest order, and with Rodgers still in the dugout, you can’t see anything changing anytime soon.
