Deluded Barry Ferguson makes Celtic and Rangers title claim ahead of possible Steven Gerrard return

Celtic’s trophy-laden coach, Brendan Rodgers, has seen off another Rangers manager.

Last season, Rodgers saw off Philippe Clement, before Barry Ferguson came in on an interim basis, and then wasn’t given the Ibrox gig full-time.

Russell Martin hasn’t lasted long either, and now it seems as though Rangers will be turning to Steven Gerrard to lead them again.

As of this moment, the Gers are sitting eighth in the Premiership table, nine points behind Celtic, and a further 11 points behind surprise leaders Hearts.

But Ferguson is rather optimistic.

Can Rangers still beat Celtic to the Premiership title?

When Clement was in charge, you heard a lot of noise from Rangers supporters about what they were going to do to stop Celtic; it ended in one way.

Then, this summer, with the 49ers coming into Rangers, they were hyped up again, only to go swimming in Loch Lomond to try and change their fortunes.

But even with Rangers looking and playing so abject, a rather deluded Ferguson has joined another hyped up Gers train, because he thinks his former side still has a chance of winning the title, as he told the Daily Record.

“It’s still early in the season,” said Ferguson. “31 games still left domestically, what is that? 93 points.

“There’s still a lot of football. I don’t think it’s over yet. They are in four competitions.”

Journalist: “If Rangers make the right appointment, you think they can still win this league this year?”

Ferguson: “Yeah. You can never give up. Nine points behind Celtic. 11 points behind Hearts. Fair due to Hearts. A great start to the season.

“Celtic are nine points. I don’t think Celtic are firing on all cylinders at this moment in time. But you are still in all four competitions.

“You have got a semi-final (of the League Cup). The Scottish Cup is still to start up, in terms of the bigger clubs coming into it. You have 31 games in the league left, and you are still in the Europa League.”

Celtic’s next five Premiership matches

Celtic aren’t playing well either, but they are still unbeaten on the domestic stage and nine points clear of Rangers.

As soon as the champions of Scotland get going, then it’s goodbye for the rest, as they have proven by winning 13 out of the last 14 titles.

Hopefully, Celtic’s late winner over Motherwell will spark life into the team, because this is the next five league matches for the Hoops:
