Derek Ferguson shocked as he learns Rangers trophy truth amid Celtic dominance after Queen’s Park loss

Nothing much has changed from Brendan Rodgers’ first spell at Celtic to what is happening now.

It was like he never left because Celtic won the Treble Treble when he first joined, then another clean sweep under Ange Postecoglou, and now another is on the cards.

During that period, many Rangers managers have passed by as Celtic continue to dominate, although, Philippe Clement has done pretty well to remain in his job so far.

Usually, Rodgers has already seen past another Rangers manager, but Clement is still firm in that Ibrox hotseat, but you wonder for how much longer?

Queen’s Park knocked Rangers out of the Scottish Cup on Sunday, including James Tavernier watching his stoppage-time penalty saved by Calum Ferrie.

It ends another chance for Rangers to win a trophy and face the humiliation of losing to Celtic in the final – just like they did in the Scottish Cup final last season and during that penalty shootout drama in the League Cup final in December.

But this has been the norm for over a decade now, as even Derek Ferguson wasn’t aware of how bad it has been.

Derek Ferguson shocked by Rangers trophy haul as Celtic continue to dominate

Celtic have 119 trophies to their name – no team in Scotland has more – and it’s the sign of who is the king of Scotland.

But Ferguson was left shocked when he was told about how many trophies Rangers have won since 2011.

Ferguson thought his former side had only won ‘three out of the last 27’ trophies, but when he was corrected by his colleague, he couldn’t believe what he was hearing, as he told BBC Radio Scotland.

“There is another stat,” said Ferguson. “I think Rangers, out of the last 27 trophies that have been up for grabs, we have only won three. Three out of 27, which isn’t a good stat to be had.”

Ferguson is then interrupted by the BBC presenter: “That stat you threw out, Derek. What did you say? Three out of what?” Ferguson then repeated: “Three out of 27.”

Before the BBC presenter corrected Ferguson: “Three out of 42.” And a shocked Ferguson responded: “Is it?! Wow. I stand corrected.”

Ferguson is then told: “It goes all the way back to the season 2010/11. They won both the league and the League Cup. It’s remarkable. It might not quite be 42 because I have counted this season. But when you take it through from there, they won the league in 2021. The Scottish Cup in 2021/22 and they won the League Cup in 2023/24.”

Celtic’s trophies since 2011

Going back to the period Ferguson was referring to, let’s have a look at how Celtic have been racking up the trophies, Trebles and invincible seasons during that period.

It has been an utter joy to watch, including progression in the Champions League and the only ones who can stop Celtic are themselves.

That’s 12 Scottish Premiership titles since 2011, not including the one that is around the corner, eight League Cup wins, including one of the most memorable ones back in December and eight Scottish Cups.
