The colours of the Republic of Ireland flag are proudly displayed whenever or wherever Celtic are playing.

Of course, Celtic have a deep-rooted and proud Irish history, and several stars are currently representing those colours in Glasgow.

Adam Idah is the standout name, with the former Norwich City player making a huge £9 million transfer to Celtic last summer after that eye-catching loan spell.

But it’s fair to say that Idah has divided opinion since moving to Celtic for good, and Callum McGregor spoke about the pressure players like him are under.

Callum McGregor on pressure on Celtic’s Irish players like Adam Idah

For the average Celtic player, the pressure of having to perform week in and week out is huge, and that will never waver.

But for local players, such as McGregor, or those with Irish blood, you presume they are under more pressure, and Celtic’s skipper wanted to highlight that.

As posted by BBC Sport, McGregor noted how ‘everyone in Ireland’ would do everything in their power to play for Celtic, and stated the ‘huge demand’ that is on players like Idah.

“The expectation at Celtic is enormous for the local lads and for the Irish lads as well that come over, there’s a huge expectation,” stated McGregor.

“I think everyone in Ireland would give their right hand to play for Celtic, so straight away there’s a huge expectation, a huge demand on the guys that come.

“They need a little bit of time to adapt and accept that pressure, but I think the boys who have done it have done it amazingly well and are a really strong part of the squad, so that’s testament to them.”

McGregor on Celtic’s visit to Cork

Preparations are underway for the 2025/26 season, with the opening Premiership clash against St Mirren less than a month away.

On Tuesday evening, Celtic beat Cork City in Ireland, with McGregor starting in the middle of the park, and rising Irish star Johnny Kenny leading the line.

McGregor spoke about Celtic’s visit to Cork and how it was a ‘special occasion’ for everyone involved.

“It’s been a while since we’ve been in that part of Ireland,” said McGregor about the trip to Cork.

“It feels so nice to come over and see the fans, let everybody see us in the flesh – It’s a special stadium. When we get to come over and see everyone in person, then it’s always a special occasion.”
