Celtic are starting a season for the first time in several years without any clarity in the striker role.
That’s because Kyogo Furuhashi left in January, and he wasn’t replaced, whilst Daizen Maeda’s services are probably more needed on the left flank, despite his goal-crazy run once his countryman left.
That’s because Jota’s long-term injury has thrown a spanner in the works, so it puts extra pressure on Adam Idah, who now becomes the main man, as of this moment, up top.
Of course, there is still plenty of time to go because the 2025 summer transfer window hasn’t been open for long, and fans want to see that proven goalscorer enter the building.
But, according to Charlie Mulgrew, they can think again!

Celtic’s search for a striker and trust in Adam Idah
Even though Celtic have been pretty busy during this last month, it’s fair to say that nothing explosive or statement-making has happened, and many supporters want that to come in the form of a top striker.
But Mulgrew told Open Goal that he ‘doesn’t think’ Celtic will put ‘big money’ on the table for a striker this summer.
Previously, the former Hoops star backed Idah to be the Premiership’s top scorer for the 2025/26 campaign, and he was asked to clarify those comments.
Si Ferry asked: “You have a shout that ‘Idah will be top scorer’. Can you tell us why?”
“Based on nothing other than it’s his time to step up,” said Mulgrew. “I don’t think they will put big money out for a striker. I think he is going to play a lot of games this year with Kyogo away, and I think he’s going to score.
“He sets himself targets. I think he will go for 25 goals this year. I just think Celtic are going to get loads of chances. He seems like he is eager to score and do well. Got a £9 million on his head, and he is going to play this year. I just think he is going to do it.
“I think so (Idah will start as the number nine). I think when you spend that amount of money on a player, there is a certain amount of pressure, and you need to play him. He needs to start. He needs to get a run of games to justify that money.”
Celtic’s striker options for the 2025/26 season
As of this moment, the Celtic Park faithful are probably slightly worried and frustrated because the new season is less than a month away, and there is still a cloud over that striker role.
There is no doubt that many want another new striker in, and that might yet happen, but it’s probably going to be another emerging player rather than your likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Callum Wilson or Jamie Vardy types.
Either way, this could be Celtic’s striker options for the new season:
- Adam Idah
- Johnny Kenny
- Callum Osmand
- Daizen Maeda
- Benjamin Nygren
- New striker
