Stephen Welsh has already provided his parent club, Celtic, with a massive helping hand in their quest to win the Premiership title.
However, the on-loan centre-back isn’t the only player in Motherwell colours with past Celtic connections doing them a massive favour – step forward, Stephen O’Donnell.
As Welsh rightfully took the spotlight on Sunday as Motherwell beat Rangers at Ibrox, former Celtic academy star O’Donnell also helped himself to two assists.
It was another underrated performance from the versatile defender, who didn’t make an appearance for Celtic’s senior side, but has forged a very strong career for himself in Scotland.

Motherwell star Stephen O’Donnell provides Celtic with a helping hand in title push
The opening round of post-split fixtures has already proven to be massively significant, and it’s Celtic and Hearts who have a massive smile on their faces.
Should Rangers fall to Hearts next Monday night at Tynecastle, coupled with a Celtic victory over Hibernian, then this gripping three-way title race could very quickly be reduced to a two-horse race.
Furthermore, the likes of O’Donnell and Welsh could still provide the reigning Scottish champions with an even bigger helping hand when Motherwell host current league leaders Hearts at Fir Park on May 9.
Of course, Celtic themselves are fully aware just how dangerous this free-flowing Motherwell side is, and they need to pass their test on 13 May.
But for now, Celtic can accept the helping hand from Welsh, O’Donnell and Motherwell.
Here is a look at O’Donnell’s stats for Motherwell against Rangers:
- Minutes played: 90
- Key Passes: 3
- Assists: 2
- Accurate crosses: 2
- Passes in the opposition half: 7/9 (78%)
- Touches: 50
- Successful dribbles: 1
- Carries: 10
- Defensive contributions: 5
