Kristoffer Ajer has made a decision on his future that could affect his place in Norway’s 2026 World Cup squad.

Ajer was linked with Wolfsburg in the summer but remained with Brentford as decisions over his future needed to be made.

The defender has been with the Bees ever since joining from Celtic, and would be the perfect type of player to boost the Hoops’ defensive options.

With Norway competing at the World Cup later this year, the 27-year-old reached a crossroads and needed to decide where his future belonged.

Kristoffer Ajer ignores Norway manager’s suggestion about future

Even though the Hoops Treble winner was told by the Norway manager to find a new club to give himself the best chance of being involved at the World Cup, Ajer has opted to remain at Brentford and commit to a long-term deal.

Explaining his decision he told the Brentford website: “It’s a club where I’ve spent four and a half years of my career now, and I’m super happy to extend my stay here.

“The players, the backroom staff, and the whole club just feel like a real family for me, so being able to stay for four more years is really good.”

Now an established Premier League player, Ajer can credit Celtic with his rise through the ranks of European football.

He joined Celtic as a teenager after captaining Start as a 16-year-old in his homeland of Norway.

Five years on and over 100 appearances later, Brentford came calling, but Ajer always has fond memories of Glasgow.

“To walk out at Celtic Park in front of 60,000 people, to live in Glasgow, to win trophies with my good mates – it was a very, very nice time,” he said back in 2021.

“It’s absolutely like living in a goldfish bowl! It’s 24/7 football in that city. Half the city really, really like you; half the city hate you!”.
