Former Celtic Academy talent Daniel Church has been forced to retire at just 25. Football can be cruel. At 25, Church has found that out the hardest way possible.

Church never played for Celtic’s first team when he left the club in 2020 after 13 years at the club.

Since then he has played for Dumbarton, Queen of the South, East Fife and Alloa. And now, Church has retired stating the decision had been “taken out of my hands” after years of battling injuries and refusing to give up on playing again.

Daniel Church’s Celtic past is only part of the story

Church came through the academy before leaving Celtic and forging a career elsewhere in Scotland.

He left the club and went on to play for Alloa Athletic, East Fife, Dumbarton and Queen of the South. He returned to Alloa last summer after making 66 appearances during his first spell.

Another spell on the sidelines followed. Last month, Alloa confirmed he would leave the club after battling through a season of serious injuries.

Announcing his retirement, Church said, “Football has been a massive part of my life for as long as I can remember.

“After overcoming setback after setback, I always told myself I’d never give up. No matter how many injuries came my way, I’d keep fighting to get back on the pitch. Unfortunately, this time the decision has been taken out of my hands, and I’ve been forced to retire much earlier than I ever wanted.

“I’m incredibly grateful for everything football has given me- the memories, the friendships, and the lessons I’ll carry for life.

“Sometimes life takes you down a different path than the one you planned. You can’t always control where it leads, but you can choose how you respond.”

Celtic fans know football can be unforgiving

Most academy players never make it into Celtic’s first team. Church wasn’t the first and he won’t be the last. There is no shame in that.

He still enjoyed a professional career in the Scottish game. Every time injuries knocked him back, he worked to return.

This time, there was no comeback left. There was no bitterness in Church’s message. He thanked football for the memories, the friendships and the lessons it gave him.

That deserves respect. Not pity.
