Fran Alonso’s Celtic created their own piece of history this afternoon as they defeated Rangers in the Scottish Cup this afternoon. Celtic retained the trophy for the first time in their history after the 2-1 win at Hampden.
Manager, Fran Alonso’s pride was evident as he lavished praise on his team’s ability to bounce back from the disappointment of losing out on the league is such a cruel fashion just last week.
Speaking post-match, Alonso said [BBC], “I’m absolutely delighted. What we’ve done this year with women’s football in Scotland is incredible. Three years ago, I couldn’t believe this.

“Obviously I’m biased, but it would have been unfair if those girls didn’t have silverware. I couldn’t be any more proud. They get the silverware that they deserved. I can’t wait to celebrate with our fans, our family.”
Celtic this season under Alonso have produced some breathtaking and memorable moments. Keeping the pressure on at the top of the league until the last game of the season drove huge interest not only in the Celtic Women’s side but on the women game in Scotland as a whole.

The Celtic supporters broke the SWPL record attendance twice this season as they backed Alonso’s Ghirls to title glory. Unfortunately, a late Glasgow City winner at Ibrox pipped them to the title.
But an end-of-season Scottish Cup win is certainly a sweetener to what was a bitter end to the SWPL season. Next season, Fran will no doubt be aiming to win the title. He will be looking to build on this season’s success by winning the league for the first time in the club’s history.
But, for now, Alonso and his Ghirls sit back and enjoy their Scottish Cup win. Heaven knows they deserve to after all they have been through this season.
