Was Celtic’s pre-season friendly against Middlesbrough a sign of things to come?

After a trip to Ireland and then Portugal, where Martin O’Neill’s side failed to win, the players returned home for their first pre-season match ahead of the new season.

When the Celtic players walked out onto the Parkhead pitch, they would have noticed plenty of empty seats, with this game coming off the back of Kelechi Iheanacho and Marcelo Saracchi not re-signing.

Frank McAvennie labelled the Celtic Park faithful voting with their feet as ’embarrassing’ for the club, and thinks the Not Another Penny campaign is working.

Speaking on his Let Me Be Frank YouTube channel, McAvennie added that some Celtic season ticket holders won’t be going to games anymore.

“That was embarrassing against Middlesbrough, that was embarrassing,” said McAvennie.

“That would never happen. This Not Another Penny is working. I know a couple of people who have got their season tickets, but they aren’t going. They aren’t going to games.

“Duran wanted to give it the big wave (after he scored against Boro), but there was nobody there.”

Champions League qualifiers and transfer window will dictate Celtic Park atmosphere

Last season, the powers that be at Celtic, who hardly take responsibility, admitted that they made mistakes during the 2025 summer transfer window.

The issue is that many fans are worried that history will repeat itself.

It’s pretty simple: if the Hoops start the season poorly, don’t secure Champions League football, and that’s reflected in the transfer market, then the home crowd is going to turn.

Not only that, there will be plenty of empty seats, just like against Boro, and this Not Another Penny campaign will seriously start to kick in.

O’Neill did bring everyone together as Celtic won the domestic double last term, but it won’t work this time, so McAvennie’s suggestion that some season ticket holders won’t consider attending might, unfortunately, become the norm.
