The Glasgow derby has always commanded a global audience, but Celtic’s dramatic Scottish Cup quarter-final victory against Rangers has sent shockwaves far beyond city lines.

From the sports pages of Tomas Cvancara’s home country, the Czech Republic, to the digital bulletins in Mexico, where Julian Araujo represents, the world’s media is still reeling from a fixture that redefined pure footballing drama, for good and bad reasons.

International outlets were left visibly stunned, as Martin O’Neill’s side ‘unleashed chaos’ – surviving 120 gruelling minutes, without a single shot on target before silencing the Ibrox crowd in a nerve-racking penalty shootout.

As you can imagine, Celtic’s penalty shootout win wasn’t the only thing that made the headlines; so did both sets of supporters clashing post-match.

How can we ensure that the Glasgow derby can continue having full allocations after the latest incident?

Japanese media question Daizen Maeda’s disallowed goal

Celtic didn’t have a shot on target, but they did have a goal disallowed in the first half when Liam Scales was judged to be offside when he flicked the ball on for Daizen Maeda to score.

Japan outlet Soccerdigestweb questioned if it was the right call to disallow Maeda’s first goal in two months, as they highlighted O’Neill’s comments, and how he thought it was ‘very questionable.’

Their headline read: ‘Was it right to disallow the Japan national team striker’s first goal in two months? Former Celtic manager thinks it’s “very questionable” but former referee asserts “there’s absolutely no problem’

The ugly scenes at the end of the game were always going to be the main headline and talking point, as Fox Sports in the United States of America led with that story.

It also noted ‘the return of the away allocation’, and how the SFA will now launch an investigation into the matter.

Cvancara had the honour of scoring Celtic’s winning penalty in front of the Rangers fans, and Czech outlet TN Nova noted how, after his spot-kick went in, it all ‘unleashed chaos.’

They also pointed out that Cvancara had ‘blood on his shirt’, as he was conducting an interview with Premier Sports after the match.

Mexican media highlights Julian Araujo ‘clashing with Rangers fans’

Araujo is becoming a cult hero at Celtic, despite only signing for the club in January, and that on a loan deal from Bournemouth.

But Araujo’s performance, how he has fitted into life at Celtic, and how he is winding up the opposition, is making him a very popular figure.

Mexican outlet Fox Sports picked up on the right-back winding up the Rangers fans, as he was making his way down the tunnel and getting a ton of abuse from the home support.

The headline read: ‘Julián Araujo clashed with Rangers fans after Scottish Cup victory; Celtic advanced’, and stated that he ‘put on a show’ in the Glasgow derby.
