Gabby Agbonlahor’s strange Celtic and Rangers comments don’t add up, Ally McCoist failed to correct him

Celtic normally blow the Scottish opposition away in domestic competitions.

Brendan Rodgers’ attacking style meant that Celtic supporters were treated to numerous goal-fests as the Hoops successfully defended the Scottish Premiership.

However, this season, the Flag Day opener didn’t go all of Celtic’s way as a dogged St Mirren held out until the final ten minutes before a 1-0 win was recorded.

Coupled with Rangers’ poor start to the season, talkSPORT’s Gabby Agbonlahor made comments about Celtic’s results compared to Rangers that just didn’t add up, and his co-host Ally McCoist failed to correct him

Gabby Agbonlahor said ‘it’s not easy’ for Celtic and Rangers

Discussing the start of the new season, Agbonlahor was stunned at the start Rangers have had and commented how Celtic struggled against St Mirren.

Completely forgetting Celtic blew Aberdeen away on Sunday, the former Aston Villa man made a strange comparison between the Hoops’ results and Rangers’ struggles.

Agbonlahor told talkSPORT, “Celtic versus St Mirren. I thought St Mirren were very good defensively. Celtic won late on 1-0. But do you think the Motherwell’s, the other teams in the SPFL, they’re bridging the gap a little bit, bit by bit with clever signings. They’re not just going to roll over.”

McCoist: “I hope so, I hope so. Aberdeen haven’t had a great start, but look at Derek [McInnes] over at Hearts he’s gone there from Kilmarnock, another good result at Dundee United at the weekend. Hibs had a fantastic result beating Partizan Belgrade 2-0 away from home.”

Agbonlahor: “If you’re Rangers and Celtic and they’re not playing Hibernian, St Mirren and Kilmarnock, even at home, it used to be when I was young, it was like, ‘Okay, Rangers and Celtic have won, they’re on your acca. Okay, what’s next?’ And now it’s a bit like, ‘Okay, it’s still nil, nil?’. It’s not as easy now, is it?”

McCoist: “If you’re not a fan of Rangers and Celtic, that’s what you want to see. I don’t think that’s a bad thing.”

If only that comment was corrected at the time by McCoist. On many occasions over the last two seasons, Celtic have taken early leads in the majority of their games.

In fact, the Parkhead club’s storming start to last season meant that the title race was effectively over by December.

More often than not, Celtic took at least a two-goal lead into half-time. In seven out of the first ten fixtures, the Hoops won by three goals or more.

In fact, 18 out of all fixtures were won with Celtic scoring four goals or more.

One struggling home win over St Mirren should not cloud that fact and it’s little wonder McCoist didn’t correct Agbonlahor. It would have been too painful for the former Rangers man.
