Celtic battled bravely over two legs against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Not many people had given Brendan Rodgers’ side hope of overcoming the German giants but Celtic proved against Bayern over two legs that they deserve to mix it with the cream of European football.

Celtic’s 2-1 defeat to Bayern at Parkhead made the return leg at the Allianz Arena look like an impossible task but after Nicolas Kuhn struck in the 60th minute last night, it looked like Celtic were going to defy the odds and force extra time in Germany.

But it wasn’t to be as Bayern equalised in the dying seconds to end the Hoops’ Champions League dreams but it seems that the media in Germany are less than impressed with the Bundesliga club as they paid tribute to the ‘danger’ Celtic posed.

Celtic almost ‘disgrace’ Bayern Munich as media lambast Bundesliga giants

The German media were less than impressed with Vincent Kompany’s side but also credited Celtic for going toe-to-toe with the Bundesliga club.

Spiegel: “Is this Bayern luck or can it be done away with? FC Bayern were in danger of being eliminated from the Champions League, at least extra time against Celtic was imminent.

“Then a very late goal was scored and the Munich team are in the round of 16.”

Sport1: “Last-minute drama! Bayern avoids disgrace. Bayern Munich saves itself against Celtic at the last second and makes it to the round of 16. Alphonso Davies keeps the dream of the ‘final at home’ alive.”

Celtic praised for ‘hard-fought’ Champions League draw vs Bayern Munich

The praise continues for Celtic as the media as Bayern ‘stumbles’ into the last 16 draw.

Kicker: “Thanks to a hard-fought 1-1 draw against Celtic Glasgow, FC Bayern are in the round of 16 after a less than brilliant performance in the second leg of the Champions League play-offs.”

Bild: “Champions League: Bayern – Celtic 1:1! Bayern stumbles into the round of 16!”

Sueddeutsche: “Sigh in injury time. After conceding a goal by former Munich player Nicolas Kühn, FC Bayern must fear for their place against Celtic. Salvation only comes with the last action.”

FAZ: “Bayern barely made it to the round of 16. After winning the first leg, it should have been a simple task for Bayern against the underdogs from Scotland. But then a lot of things went wrong.”

Whilst the praise is all well and good the pain for Celtic and the fans at how they came so close to knocking out Bayern Munich will sting for a while.

But what the fans and players can do is be proud of their efforts over the two legs as when the draw was made, many didn’t give Celtic hope to get even close to Bayern never mind almost pulling off an historic win in Germany.
