Graeme Souness’ bizarre view on the gap between Celtic and Rangers

The gap between Celtic and Rangers is something that will always be spoken about in football circles and it has once again reared its head after matchday two in the Scottish Premiership.

Celtic have already recorded two impressive wins in their opening league games of the season whereas Rangers have dropped points against Hearts and narrowly beat Motherwell at Hampden on Saturday.

With the first Glasgow Derby just over two weeks away, Graeme Souness was asked about where he thought the gap between the clubs is now that Celtic look so commanding at this early stage of the season.

Souness’ ‘common sense’ view on Celtic gap

Just as he did last season, Souness was in no mood to entertain any notion that the gap between the two clubs was massive.

And whilst Jim White was happy to admit that the gap was massive, Souness doubled down.

Souness said [talkSPORT], “The discussion last season was about the gap. Now I don’t think there is such a big gap. I really don’t.

“I think I saw about four games, two O-d F-rm games last year of Rangers. I obviously watch them on the telly when they are on, I watch Celtic when they are on, I don’t see the gap as being enormous.

“I’m telling you, logic tells you and common sense tells me that there’s not a lot in it. Now if Celtic get £30m (for Matt O’Riley) and go and spend it wisely then that gap would get bigger.”

Celtic streets ahead on and off the park

What is undeniable is that on and off the park, Celtic are ahead of Rangers. Financially, the gulf between both clubs is massive.

Celtic have millions in the bank whereas Rangers seem to be in a position where they need to sell to be able to bring other players in.

On the park, a two-point gap has already opened up and that is before Celtic have added more new faces the the first-team squad.

Even the most optimistic Rangers fan would concede that at this moment in time, Celtic have the better players, and a stronger manager and now with Rangers having no real home advantage, it could be argued that the Parkhead club are already in the driving seat this season.

Souness should maybe face the reality that Ally McCoist shared about Celtic this morning. Brendan Rodgers’ team are stronger and is only going to get better as soon as more new signings are made.
