Graeme Souness can’t accept the truth about Celtic as he rolls out the excuses for Rangers

It has been another season where Brendan Rodgers has had a cigar in hand as he edges closer to guiding Celtic to another Premiership title.

Usually, it’s Celtic that provide the entertainment, but Rangers have been doing that in bucket loads recently, especially after the weekend.

Celtic’s lead at the top of the Premiership table is now 16 points and it was aided by Barry Ferguson losing his first Rangers home game in charge to Motherwell on Saturday.

On top of the Hoops beating St Mirren 5-2 in Paisley, days after scoring five against Aberdeen.

Not forgetting that, with the Scottish Cup returning this weekend, Celtic are still on for the Treble as they host Hibernian on home soil this Sunday.

Once again, it’s pure dominance by the men in green and white, yet it wasn’t so long ago that a certain Graeme Souness was dismissing this all.

Back in August, Souness told talkSPORT about how ‘I don’t think there is such a big gap. I really don’t’ between Celtic and Rangers.

It’s fair to say that Souness isn’t so chirpy now because he is rolling out the excuses for his old club.

Graeme Souness says Rangers a ‘very different club’ as Celtic storm towards Premiership title

The old excuse of Rangers haven’t got much money to spend has been rolled out by Souness, as Celtic storm towards the title.

Even Kris Boyd himself claimed that ‘It’s a myth that Philippe Clement hasn’t had money to spend’ after Rangers sacked Clement last month.

But, of course, as reality starts to hit, speaking to PLZ Soccer, Souness stated how ‘we had lots of funds to work with’ when he was playing and he is hoping a new possible ownership at Ibrox will provide that.

“Very different story, it’s a very different club to the one I worked at,” said Souness about Rangers.

“We had lots of funds to work with. Rangers haven’t had that in their recent history, and hopefully, that should be about to change.

“I obviously want to see Rangers be successful. I think, if someone came in and had the financial capability to go out and buy better players, that can only be good news. It doesn’t guarantee anything, but it would be good news.”

Can Celtic win the league by beating Rangers in the next Glasgow derby?

Celtic produced an Ibrox horror show last time out and many will be wanting to put that right, even though a different man will now be in the opposition dugout.

But, with Celtic’s lead at the top at 16 points, if they beat Rangers on March 16, that then stretches to 19, with 24 points still to play, so no the title can’t be won by winning the Glasgow derby.

However, Celtic can become champions before the split – a clash against Hearts and a trip to rock-bottom St Johnstone to come after the Rangers match.

So, have Celtic’s clash against St Johnstone on April 6 penciled into your diaries.
