Greg Taylor told why Jeffrey Schlupp started for Celtic vs Bayern Munich

One of the biggest talking points before Celtic kicked off against Bayern Munich was who would start the big Champions League game.

Much of the chatter surrounding whether or not Brendan Rodgers would choose Daizen Maeda to start for Celtic instead of Adam Idah after the Japanese winger gave Bayern a torrid time at Celtic Park.

However, there was a debate being had about whether or not Greg Taylor should start in Germany after Brendan Rodgers captured the loan signing of Jeffrey Schlupp in the January window.

Taylor has been a mainstay for Celtic over the last few seasons but Rodgers opted to start the Ghanaian fullback and, if truth be told, Schlupp didn’t let the Celtic manager down.

And analysing the decision to drop Taylor to the Celtic bench, Troy Deeney shared exactly why Rodgers went with the 32-year-old defender in Munich.

Jeffrey Schlupp’s ‘pace and know-how’ got him the nod to start for Celtic vs Bayern Munich

Deeney said on talkSPORT, “I think Jeff’s got the pace and the know-how as well.

“We spoke about it already, he’s won the Premier League, obviously, and played in the Champions League as well. with Leicester.

“He’s had a solid career at Crystal Palace as well so you would say he’s used to playing at that left-back position.

“He probably knows Olise a lot better as well having played with him at Crystal Palace, so a lot of factors as to why he would have started in this game.”

Troy Deeney wanted to name Daizen Maeda as Celtic’s man of the match vs Bayern but didn’t

“I wanted to give it to Maeda,” continued Deeney, “For the way that he worked, but I’m actually going to go for Jeffrey Schlupp.

“I thought Jeff was excellent today. He defended really well. He came up against Leroy Sane, Moussialla and Olise.

“I would say that’s the best performance I’ve ever seen Jeffery Schlupp put together. He was excellent.”

Schlupp has proven to be an astute piece of business by Rodgers even in the early infancy of his sort Celtic career.

The defender was impressive in his cameo debut against Raith Rovers in the Scottish Cup and against Dundee United last weekend, Schlupp showed his quality in both defence and attack and was unlucky not to score his first goal for Celtic.

With Hibs up next, Schlupp is likely to start in the capital as Brendan Rodgers aims to take Celtic one step closer to the title with a win at Easter Road.
