‘Had a real chance’… Celtic told they should have signed £6m striker instead of Adam Idah

Celtic have been told that if they spent £6m on a striker instead of getting Adam Idah in on loan, they would still be ahead of Rangers in the league.

The Republic of Ireland striker has been hitting the headlines this week after his brilliant double against Motherwell at the weekend.

However, it seems that if Celtic splashed the cash on Bojan Miovski, Rodgers wouldn’t be chasing Rangers. That’s according to journalist, Stephen McGowan.

McGowan said [Off The Ball], “It’s a very hard sale to justify having £67 or £72m in the bank when you’re second to your biggest rivals and have a very good chance of winning the league.

“I mean all those zeros at the end of the bank balance, they are absolutely no use whatsoever if you’re not going to win the league and if you’re going to let your rivals get into the Champions League.

“And there’s a very good chance of that with 12 games to go.

“For me, Celtic had a get-out-of-jail card in January.  They have all that money in the bank, they were clearly not quite at it before Christmas, although they did beat Rangers on the 30th of December.

“So they had a real chance to go and splash some money. They could have signed Bojan Miovski. They could have given Aberdeen £6m or whatever.

“And people say, ‘Oh, we’re not paying that for an SPFL player.’ Well why not?

“Because I think if Celtic signed Bojan Miovski instead of Adam Idah they would still be top of the league.”

Bojan Miovski to Celtic still rumbles on

I think it’s fair to say that Celtic simply won’t be pursuing the Aberdeen striker. The window to do that was in January but the free-scoring strikers stock has risen so high that we could be priced out of a summer move.

The £6m price that McGowan mentions may well have secured Miovski’s signature last month but it looks like his 22 goals in 34 appearances in a struggling Aberdeen side will no doubt prick the ears of some clubs in England. [Transfermarkt]

However, Idah has come in and done a fantastic job so far for Celtic. Four goals in five appearances (which includes two high-pressure penalties against Hibs) have kept the Hoops within touching distance at the top of the league and earned him a place in the Celtic support hearts.

If the Irishman can continue his goalscoring streak and bring home the league, no one will even mention Miovski at the end of the season and, most importantly, Rodgers will have been vindicated for signing, what many thought was in January, a gamble.
