Mikey Johnston facing relegation risk after leaving Celtic amid West Brom points deduction threat

Mikey Johnston showed a lot of promise in the colours of Celtic.

But the all-action winger couldn’t cement his place in Celtic’s starting XI, and he parted ways with the club in 2024 and joined West Bromwich Albion in the English Championship.

When Johnston initially joined West Brom, he went on loan and scored a few high-quality goals, but his performances have been mixed since his permanent transfer.

However, as of this moment, Johnston is on the sidelines after he suffered a stress fracture of his ankle in March, but by the time he comes back, he could be playing in England’s third-tier.

That’s because West Brom are hovering above the relegation zone, and now they could be hit with a points deduction before the final ball is kicked in May.

Were Celtic right to let go of Mikey Johnston?

West Brom facing a points deduction as Mikey Johnston is sidelined

For those Celtic fans who don’t know, last season, former player David Turnbull was relegated from the Championship to League One with Cardiff City.

Albeit for different reasons, Johnston could go down that road in the next few weeks, and some of it might be down to off-field matters.

John Percy of The Telegraph reported on Monday that the Baggies have been ‘charged with an alleged breach of P & S rules’, and they could now face a possible points deduction.

Albion are currently two points above the relegation zone, with four games in the season remaining. Even a minimal points deduction would send them into the bottom three, and it could prove to be catastrophic.

Leicester City, who won the Premier League title ten years ago, are currently in the relegation zone and were deducted six points this season.

Johnston’s stats at West Brom since leaving Celtic

Johnston showcased lots of promise at Parkhead. Brendan Rodgers certainly liked him, but he just couldn’t find that extra gear.

What’s interesting is that the Republic of Ireland star would get into this abject and declining Celtic side. One of the major issues have been out wide.

But while Celtic endured their Wilfried Nancy nightmare in Glasgow, so did West Brom with Eric Ramsey, after they brought him in from the MLS, and he was sacked after failing to win his nine matches in charge.

Nonetheless, this is how Johnston has fared during his time in the Midlands.
