How pundit has urged Premiership club not to allow routine Celtic win to derail their season

Celtic are streets ahead of every other club in the country.

Brendan Rodgers’ side have already won the Premier Sports Cup in what was a dramatic and nerve-shredding finale against Rangers back in December.

Celtic are also 16 points clear at the top of the Scottish Premiership table and are on course for yet another Treble under the manager with a Scottish Cup semi-final to come.

So it would be harsh for any other club behind Rangers to even try and judge themselves or their season’s success up against the champions. That is a sentiment echoed by former Hibs striker Tam McManus following the Easter Road side’s defeat at Celtic Park in last weekend’s quarter-final.

Tam McManus says Hibs won’t let Celtic loss derail their season

Celtic beat Hibs 2-0 in Glasgow to earn a semi-final against St Johnstone but McManus has urged his old employers to ensure they don’t allow that defeat to derail their campaign.

“Being dumped out the Scottish Cup is always a kick in the jewels. But Sunday’s defeat at Celtic Park doesn’t have to take the shine off Hibs’ season. It really could still be a gem even without silverware,” he wrote in his Daily Record column.

“Unlike the cup which would be in the lap of Gods at Hampden for two games, I reckon Hibs are a strong bet to land the Premiership’s best of the rest spot. That race for third has certainly taken on added incentive, added pressure. Ask me and it’s a straight fight between Hibs and Aberdeen.

“Hearts are too far off. They would need to go on an incredible run of form and it’s not just one club they’re chasing it’s four. They’re best hope of more Euro group stage football is winning the cup.

“But David Gray’s side have a steeliness about them now, which was evident against Celtic Park on Sunday, whereas earlier in the season they were being branded soft every week.

“Sunday was a sore one but it was always going to be tough at Celtic Park, particularly after having prodded the monster by beating them in the league a few weeks earlier. When you go to Parkhead you need Celtic to have an off-day.

“You could tell from the first couple of minutes that Celtic were on it. They’d wound them up a fortnight earlier. It was pay back time.

“Brendan Rodgers players were intent on putting them back in their place, a bit like they did to Aberdeen in the League Cup semi final. And nobody in Scotland can stop them in that mood.”

Celtic wins bookended Hibs’ incredible winning run

Credit must go to David Gray who has hauled Hibs from the foot of the table all the way up to third in the division having gone on an incredible 15 match unbeaten run including two Edinburgh derby wins. But their form was book-ended by defeats at Celtic even though Hibs beat Celts 2-1 in February.

Celtic, meanwhile, have been at it since the beginning of the term and their stars are shoo-ins for player of the year nominations including the red-hot Daizen Maeda, Nicolas Kuhn and Callum McGregor who has found his shooting boots this season.

You never know. Rangers are still in Europa League action and don’t look particularly good under Barry Ferguson.

Hibs could still crack second. And we’d be delighted for them!
