Celtic winger Hyunjun Yang has been told exactly why he will struggle to get ahead of James Forrest in the Hoops starting XI.

Stiliyan Petrov was taking in Sky Sports punditry duty and when the Hoops legend heard Celtic’s starting XI against Aberdeen, the Bulgarian knew exactly why Rodgers went with the experienced Forrest.

With Celtic having the opportunity to go four points clear of Rangers, Rodgers will have been keen to leave Aberdeen with all three points.

And in choosing Forrest ahead of Yang, Petrov tells the young South Korean winger what he needs to do to become a regular Celtic starter this season.

Stiliyan Petrov tells Hyunjun Yang he must ‘learn’ from what James Forrest does at Celtic

Hyunjun Yang has flattered to deceive for much of his Celtic career but despite Petrov delivering some harsh truths to the South Korean, he also delivered some words of encouragement.

Petrov told Sky Sports, “I think Yang and Forrest are completely different. I think Yang, every time he comes in he needs instruction.

“He waits for Alistair Johnston to overlap and make the ground. With James Forrest, he doesn’t wait for it.

“He knows that he has to be a game winner. He’ll make things happen, and take that responsibility.

“But having James Forrest, Yang will learn that and when to take that responsibility, when to get the confidence.

“Because James Forrest, he is just so direct, so direct, and he’s looking for that killer cross, and he’s trying to get in that box.”

Hyunjun Yang will never have a better time to make his mark at Celtic

With Celtic in the market for a winger, Yang will never have a better time than now to make his mark at Celtic and prove his worth to the team.

With Jota out until at least next summer and Celtic still trying to replace Nicolas Kuhn, Rodgers needs wide players to support his attacking options up front.

If Yang can’t solidify his place in the Celtic first-team now, fans will be left wondering exactly when he will.
