Celtic need a striker and Jamie Vardy seems to be the only quality option linked.

The Leicester City legend is a free agent and currently training alone in Portugal after leaving the King Power Stadium at the end of last season.

Vardy scored 200 goals for the Foxes and is reportedly now ‘desperate’ to add to his career tally at Celtic under his former manager Brendan Rodgers.

There’s been no contact between Celtic and Vardy’s representatives, but it’s clear the 38-year-old has his heart set on the Hoops.

So what does Vardy’s ex-teammate Kasper Schmeichel think of the rumours?

Schmeichel addresses Vardy to Celtic speculation

Schmeichel and Vardy shared a dressing room at Leicester for a decade and won four trophies together, most prominently the 2015/16 Premier League title.

The goalkeeper left Leicester in 2022, while Vardy spent another three years at the club before seeking a fresh challenge following their relegation to the EFL Championship.

Asked if there’s been contact between him and Vardy recently amid the striker’s links with Celtic, Schmeichel replied: “Jamie is an incredible striker that would make any team better I think.

“But I haven’t spoken to him about it, no. I don’t really know what his thoughts would be or the club’s thoughts would be.

“But I can only say when I played with him at Leicester he was an incredible guy and an incredible striker.”

What could Vardy cost Celtic in wages?

Of course, Celtic won’t need to pay a transfer fee if they opt to recruit Vardy on a short term contract, and don’t have to sign him before September 1.

But Vardy’s wage demands could cause an issue within Celtic’s salary structure.

Capology claimed in May 2025 that Vardy was earning £140k per week before tax with Leicester City in the Premier League.

That’s an astronomical sum that is way out of Celtic’s league, so both parties would need to reach a financial compromise.
