‘His preference’ – Roger Hannah shares what he knows about Jamie Vardy’s interest in Celtic

Is there really any truth in Jamie Vardy to Celtic?

That was the question asked of The Scottish Sun’s head of sport and Clyde 1 Superscoreboard pundit Roger Hannah on Monday.

The publication claimed that Vardy is ‘desperate’ to join Celtic as a free agent having left Leicester City in the summer after scoring 200 goals for the club.

Napoli seem to be considering Vardy at this moment in time, but Hannah outlined clearly who the striker really wants to sign for.

Celtic-linked Vardy’s number one preference revealed

Hannah spoke live on Clyde 1 Superscoreboard and was asked by a Celtic fan if it’s Vardy wanting to join Celtic, or the other way about.

The journalist explained Vardy’s number one preference is Celtic, but a deal is not imminent at the moment.

Hannah said: “It’s actually come from one of our colleagues down south, a writer called Henry Tomlinson, and the onus really is on Jamie Vardy as opposed to Celtic.

“He’s out of contract having left Leicester and there’s been a few notes of interest from overseas and down south. But I think his preference would be to come to Celtic.

“He worked closely down there (at Leicester) with Brendan Rodgers. When Brendan first went down, he put a lot of stock in the leadership group, which oddly enough was Jamie Vardy, Kasper Schmeichel and Wes Morgan.

“He was very close to them all and I think Jamie Vardy appreciated Brendan Rodgers’ management down there, if you like. And if it was up to him, he would come up to Celtic.

“There’s nothing really to drive the fact that it would be imminent. But if it was up to Jamie Vardy, it would be imminent.”

Sky Sports say ‘no contact’ between Vardy and Celtic

It may be true that Vardy wants to sign for Celtic, with the prospect of league phase Champions League football on the horizon and a high likelihood of winning trophies.

But do Celtic really want to sign a 38-year-old who will turn 39 in January? It would be against their signing policy, that’s for sure.

Sky Sports have outlined that while there is speculation in the air, no contact between Celtic and Vardy has initiated thus far.

They said: “We do understand that, even though there is that stunning story linking Vardy with a return to Brendan Rodgers and to go to Celtic, there haven’t been actually any discussions yet, or any contact between Celtic and Vardy.”
