Celtic supporters haven’t had much to shout about this season.
No Champions League football for Celtic, Hearts sitting at the top of the Premiership, added with abject performances from the Hoops.
But if there is one positive coming out of Celtic, then it’s the emergence and performances of rising academy star Colby Donovan.
With Celtic’s starting right-back Alistair Johnston being injured, and he has only just returned, it opened the door for Donovan to earn minutes, but has Brendan Rodgers provided him with enough?

Colby Donovan has been ‘unlucky’ at Celtic
Charlie Mulgrew told Go Radio that he can’t understand why Donovan isn’t playing more, with Anthony Ralston starting at the weekend.
Celtic were beaten at Dundee, and Mulgrew thinks Donovan has ‘done enough’ to push ahead of Ralston, but for some odd reason, Rodgers sees it differently.
“Donovan has been unlucky, I think, not to play ahead of Ralston at the weekend,” said Mulgrew. “I don’t understand that one.
“I thought Donovan had done enough to probably jump ahead of Ralston in the pecking order. Yeah, (he is also very good at crossing the ball).
“If he can’t play now, I don’t know when he is going to play.”
How Donovan has rated for Celtic this season
The chances Celtic’s young guns earn in the first team are diminishing by the season, and you do wonder where the next Callum McGregor and James Forrest are coming from.
Yes, a few academy players get minutes here and there, but that’s it. But Donovan has been the one to break through in recent times.
The 19-year-old has looked comfortable at fullback, especially in Europe, and this is how he has been rated by WhoScored.
- Premiership games: 2
- WhoScored rating: 6.68
- Europa League games: 2
- WhoScored rating: 6.56
- Other games: 15 minutes in Almaty, and 90 minutes vs Partick Thistle in the League Cup
