The return of Brendan Rodgers to Celtic has largely been welcomed by the Celtic support. There are those that disagree with the reappointment of the Irishman but in the main, there has been a huge feeling of positivity surrounding the announcement.

The new Celtic manager inherits a squad chock full of talent and international experience. He also inherits a trophy cabinet packed with a treble so all he really needs to do it make small tweaks to take the club forward and continue our domination of Scottish football.

Exciting times are ahead for the Celtic fans indeed. But the news of his return has former Rangers manager, Graeme Souness worried.

Souness was asked about Rodgers’ return to Celtic and he gave a very honest assessment of his thoughts ahead of the new season.

Speaking on talkSport, Souness said, “I tell what it does because obviously, my focus is on the other side of Glasgow. I think Brendan going back, this is a worry for me as a Rangers man, my worry would be that he’s asked for assurances in terms of budgets.

“What he’s going to spend, how much he can spend because I’m sure Brendan feels that would have got other job offers back in England, maybe not in the Premier League but certainly the top end of the championship.

“So it worries me slightly that he’s gone back there for that fact on that promises will have been made to him which is about budgets how much you can spend and that ain’t good news for Rangers.”

And he is correct. The financial promises made to Rodgers have been well documented on 67 Hail Hail. With a reported £30m to spend on transfers, the Celtic manager has a fantastic opportunity to put even more daylight between us and the rest of Scottish football.

As I touched on already, Rodgers doesn’t even need to make major changes to the squad. Ange Postecoglou has left him a squad of such quality and depth that he could go into next season with that squad and still be confident of dominating.

But, of course, that won’t happen. Rodgers will be keen to put his own stamp on the team and add players that know his system and style of play. He is also looking to make significant inroads in Europe. And that requires investment.

And if we get anywhere near the quality of football we witnessed from the Invincibles, we are in for an incredible season of football after the summer break.
