‘It’s a big job’ – Jackie McNamara tells Rangers where they must learn from Celtic

Celtic are streets ahead of Rangers this season.

The Premiership table tells its own story with the Hoops roaring towards the title having established a 13-point lead at the top of the division.

Brendan Rodgers has already lifted the Premier Sports Cup and is on course for a third Treble as Celtic manager if he and his squad can maintain focus on the task at hand.

For rivals Rangers, it has been miserable and the Ibrox club sacked Philippe Clement last week after defeat at home to St Mirren.

Barry Ferguson was brought in to become their interim boss but not everyone has been convinced that the former Alloa Athletic and Kelty Hearts head coach is the right man for the role.

Jackie McNamara says Celtic can learn from Celtic’s success

Celtic great Jackie McNamara has had his say on the noisy neighbours and believes they moved to bring in Ferguson and his ex-Gers pals backroom staff to get some passion back.

But the former defender insists the struggling Light Blues must learn from Rodgers and the way he has set Celtic up if they are to stand any chance of becoming competition again for the Celts.

“Maybe they don’t think it can get any worse than it has been in the last few weeks,” McNamara said on Open Goal. They’ll bring a bit of passion but you need a direction, a set-up that you know what you’re going to do. When I look at the Rangers team, it is all individuals.

“I think there are a couple of decent players, Vaclav Cerny is there and Raskin in a couple of positions but go and watch Rangers play. What is their structure, what are they trying to achieve, what their playing style.

“With Celtic, you know what they are doing. If one player comes out or two players come, two come in and fit into Brendan’s structure. You know what he’s going to achieve. It’s a big job.”

How far ahead really are Celtic from Rangers?

The Premiership champions are so far out in front of the Light Blues, it’s barely believable. Whether it be on the field or off the pitch, Celtic have dwarfed Rangers in financial terms too.

We dare not speculate where Rangers might improve, nor do we care, but McNamara’s comments are accurate.

Rodgers has built a long-term success story at Celtic Park and the Irishman has established that mindset in the east end of Glasgow to also accommodate the club after he’s gone.

Rangers have been about the quick-fix for so long they’re beginning to look like the Espanyol to Celtic’s Barcelona.
