James Milner’s words reveal O’Neill’s greatest quality

Speaking about the managers who shaped his career, Milner delivered a glowing assessment of O’Neill’s impact.

The Liverpool legend told Through The Years, “And then Martin as well, he’s a completely different type of manager to Roberto (Mancini) or Jurgen (Klopp).

“You know, he made you feel like the best player in the world. His man management was incredible, the first manager to move me into the middle of the park.

“Playing under him, I won PFA Young Player of the Year and got in England squad and went to a World Cup, so he sort of gave me that confidence and I grew as a player under Martin really.”

It is difficult to think of a better endorsement. Milner has worked under some of football’s biggest names, yet he still highlights O’Neill’s ability to build confidence and get the best out of his players.

The former Celtic boss did not need complicated explanations or grand speeches. According to Milner, he simply made players believe in themselves.

Celtic supporters saw exactly the same thing

Milner’s experience at Aston Villa mirrors what many Celtic fans witnessed during O’Neill’s time in Glasgow.

His teams were full of talent, but they were also full of players who looked completely committed to the manager and his vision. That connection helped transform Celtic into a force at home and a respected side in Europe.

Milner’s comments help explain why O’Neill inspired such loyalty throughout his career. Players rarely forget the managers who change how they see themselves.

More than a decade after working together, Milner still credits O’Neill for a pivotal period of his development. That says plenty about the impression the former Celtic manager left behind.

For supporters who watched O’Neill build one of the club’s most memorable modern teams, the praise comes as no surprise.
