Joe Hart, Adam Idah and Benjamin Nygren show their support for Kasper Schmeichel after retirement

When Joe Hart retired in 2024, he was leaving behind a massive void at Celtic after several years of trophy-laden success.

Celtic didn’t go down the road of bringing in a younger player to replace Hart; instead, they signed a player who was just as experienced, in Kasper Schmeichel.

While Hart decided to end his career on his own terms, that hasn’t been the case with Schmeichel, who has been ‘forced’ to retire because of a shoulder injury.

Understandably, it’s a bitter pill to swallow for Celtic’s double-winning goalkeeper, who was sent messages of support from the likes of Hart, who told him: ‘Sending love, Kasp, and congratulations on a mega career. Will see you soon. 💚’

Money isn’t an object… who are you bringing back this summer?

Adam Idah and Benjamin Nygren also show their support for Kasper Schmeichel

It’s pretty clear that Schmeichel, who is 40 in November, wanted to carry on playing for Celtic, and possibly be playing for Denmark at this summer’s World Cup – in the end, they didn’t qualify.

Neither of those things will happen because of the severity of his shoulder injury and how doctors have advised him to step away.

Adam Idah was already at Celtic when Schmeichel joined, including the duo missing out on the Treble by a kick of the football last season.

The former Hoops striker, alongside the club’s top scorer for the recent campaign, Benjamin Nygren, also sent their messages of support to Schmeichel.

Schmeichel, the pundit?

When Schmeichel initially announced his season-ending injury, he did it while working as a TV pundit for CBS Sports, alongside his dad, Peter.

Now that Schmeichel will no longer be playing, you just wonder if one of the next steps in his career is moving into the overcrowded world of football punditry.

Hopefully, Celtic return to the Champions League next season. If that’s the case, then they might have a representation in Kasper, who has worked for CBS before; they cover UCL football for American viewers.
