Jose Bordalas might be about to become available again after 2021 Celtic talks

Getafe manager Jose Bordalas may be a name to keep an eye on as Celtic hunt for a new manager.

The Hoops board have shown that they are not adverse to thinking outside of the box when appointing their top man.

Ange Postecoglou was, of course, a left-field call back in 2021. Bordalas was also in the reckoning around that time.

Back in May 2021, shortly after our pursuit of Eddie Howe collapsed, it was reported that we had spoken to Bordalas about the manager’s gig.

Enzo Maresca was also mentioned by journalist Stephen McGowan on Graham Spiers’ Press Box.

“Enzo Maresca was a very impressive candidate,” McGowan explained at the time.

“He was interviewed for the job but he took over at Parma on Thursday.

“Again, that’s one of the consequences of waiting as long as this. Names who may have been in the frame have disappeared.

“They spoke to the coach of Getafe who has joined Valencia now [Bordalas]. There were all these kind of names thrown in.”

So what is Bordalas up to now? As McGowan said, he took up the Valencia job just as Celtic were failing to land Howe.

He lasted around a year at the Mestalla, departing them in a state of turmoil.

After taking the best part of a year out, he returned to Getafe in late April, winning three of his seven matches in charge and helping them to La Liga safety.

It was reported on Tuesday evening by Football Espana that Bordalas was still considering his future at Getafe, and that Real Madrid legend Raul had been lined up as a potential replacement.

So if Bordalas does move on and Celtic are still looking, could this be a case of the perfect meeting at the perfect time?

It’s probably unlikely. But stranger things have happened.
