Kasper Schmeichel is still an elite goalkeeper at the top of his game.

The Celtic stopper may have come through criticism in recent weeks from irrelevant snipers in his home country taking aim at his Denmark form.

The PFA had to step in and demand an apology for a ridiculous column written in the Danish media which was an insult to the 38-year-old.

All that aside, however, Schmeichel continues to chase Celtic records having had a stellar campaign for his club and won his first trophy for Celtic in the process.

Celtic’s Schmeichel is among top 20 goalies in world football

According to a statistical analysis site in Football Conservatory, Schmeichel’s run in green and white has him among the elite goalkeepers in world football and still high on their list, too.

In the list of top 50 stoppers in the world, Schmeichel sits 19th with an average score of 80.6 in their index taking into account level at which he has played his matches, results and “deviation in the percentage of saves compared to the expected value”.

It is a more than respectable score for the veteran former Leicester City stopper who recently put pen to paper on a one-year contract extension at Celtic Park.

Schmeichel beat out some big-hitters from around the world.

Including the likes of Germany and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Kevin Trapp, England’s James Trafford at Burnley, Alisson of Liverpool and Brazil fame and Mile Svilar at AS Roma and Serbia.

Celtic’s goalie is currently nursing an injury he picked up on international duty.

However Brendan Rodgers was chuffed to discover that Schmeichel’s return might come earlier than initially expected.

It was believed the Dane would be missing for as many as six weeks.

But that could be a shortened timescale after Schmeichel returned to Celtic’s training pitch.
