Celtic’s summer transfer window hasn’t kicked into high gear yet. Or any gear, really.
Yet to make a single signing, some fans are starting to air concerns about another underwhelming window.
It’s too soon for widespread criticism or panic with just under two months to go until the deadline, but questions will be asked until Celtic start getting bodies in the door. And the first phase of Celtic’s window arrives much sooner than late August.
Brendan Rodgers has noted he hopes to see signings in the door before the upcoming USA tour, giving the Celtic board just 10 days to deliver a deal or two. The squad take off in the days leading up to a friendly against DC United on July 21st.
Celtic legend Kenny Dalglish has been discussing the club’s summer so far and reckons there’s plenty of work to be done, albeit in pursuit of the right quality of player.
Kenny Dalglish on the work ahead for Celtic
He said [Sunday Post, 07/07 print edition]: “It’s always good to get the boots back on but there remains quite a bit of work to do for Brendan Rodgers, the recruitment staff and in the boardroom.
“After the departure of Joe Hart, there is the need to bring in a quality goalkeeper. Scott Bain played at Somerset Park. Celts have been linked with several keepers around Europe but no deal has been done yet. I’d imagine Brendan would want to resolve this situation as quickly as possible to get the new fella in to build a rapport and understanding with his new teammates, particularly the back four.
“The ideal target would be to have as many new signings as possible on the plane to the USA for the pre-season tour in 10 days’ time. But I’m also of the view that there is no point in signing someone just for the sake of it.”

Targets will have been identified, now it’s time to deliver
Realistically most of Celtic’s scouting and recruitment work has already been done at this stage. It would be worrying if it hadn’t.
At some point transfer work all comes down to money and negotiations. We know that, at Celtic, this operates away from Brendan Rodgers and the football department at Lennoxtown. The onus is now on the board to get deals done.
If that Celtic plane takes off across the Atlantic without new faces on board then it doesn’t bode well for the kind of productive window that the club needs to kick on to a new level.
