Kris Boyd has responded to the complaints from Celtic and supporters after his column in The Scottish Sun.
As we discussed earlier, Celtic released a short statement to reassure fans his comments were being ‘addressed’ by the club after Boyd made distasteful remarks about Rangers players failing to target captain Callum McGregor and his fractured cheekbone.
Now Boyd has come back, not with an apology, but a ‘clarification’.

He told The Scottish Sun: “My Old Firm column in today’s Scottish Sun appears to have irked some Celtic supporters. Therefore I think it’s right that I add some context and clarification to a reference I made about Callum McGregor.
“I wrote: “The fact he managed to get through the 90 minutes without anyone testing out that face mask is another story, but his commitment to the team was tremendous.”
“Some have taken that line to mean I wanted one of the Rangers players to intentionally try and hurt the midfielder. However, that is absolutely and unequivocally not the case. It was simply meant as a criticism of the Rangers players for their failure to get close to McGregor.”
I think the fashionable phrase for this these days, courtesy of comedian Limmy is, “don’t back doon, double doon”.
Clearly, Boyd won’t be publicly backing down any time soon, so it remains to be seen what kind of action Celtic will take.
Will a complaint be sent to The Scottish Sun? Or Sky Sports, where Boyd works as a prominent pundit?
One wonders why Boyd mentioned McGregor’s facemask at all if he simply meant getting close to the victorious captain?

For me, McGregor, a Scotland international who is due to play important matches for his country very shortly, deserves an apology from one of the most prominent pundits, if not for the perceived ill intent of Boyd’s comments which he denies then the clumsy way they were communicated.
Celtic will now consider their options.
