Marcelo Saracchi and two other Celtic injury doubts train before Utrecht clash

Celtic are in desperate need of some new signings…

But at least Martin O’Neill has some returning faces in training, ahead of Thursday’s Europa League tie against Utrecht.

There’s no doubt that it’s been an injury-ravaged season for Celtic, with big-money signing Jota unlikely to kick a ball for the entire campaign.

Cameron Carter-Vickers and Alistair Johnston have also faced extremely long absences, the latter having been rushed back from an injury initially sustained in August.

But slowly but surely, the squad is getting bigger – regardless of the need for reinforcements, which remains obvious.

Every time Kieran Tierney goes down in game, you fear the worst – he had to be withdrawn after 73 minutes in Sunday’s 2-2 draw with Hearts.

But thankfully, he was pictured training and smiling this week, so that one seems to be a false alarm.

Marcelo Saracchi hasn’t been seen since December, in what was O’Neill’s final game in charge of Celtic… or so we thought.

He missed the entire reign of Wilfried Nancy, but has also been seen on the grass on Wednesday, as he races to get back in contention for both club and country.

Kelechi Iheanacho played just one of Nancy’s eight games: the Premier Sports Cup final against St Mirren, in which he had to be withdrawn in the first-half.

In a Celtic team in desperate need of attacking firepower, Iheanacho’s attacking contribution has been sorely missed for far too much of the season.

There’s still no sign of Callum Osmand, amid fears that his season could be over. Rotten luck, given how good an impression he made upon breaking into the first team.

A win against Utrecht would send Celtic through to the knockout phase of the Europa League. On Sunday, the Hoops return to league action against Falkirk.

But perhaps the biggest event of the next week for Celtic will be transfer deadline day, which is fast-approaching.

Would you take Marcelo Saracchi at Celtic permanently?
