Martin O’Neill has had the chance to respond to Chris Sutton’s comments about staying at Celtic for too long.

Sutton warned O’Neill about damaging his Celtic legacy should he remain in his role as interim manager for too long.

Celtic were beaten by FC Midtjylland in humbling circumstances on Thursday night, with all eyes now focused on when the board will appoint Brendan Rodgers’ long-term successor.

67 Hail Hail understands that Kjetil Knutsen is interested in joining Celtic, but only once Bodo/Glimt’s Champions League run comes to an end.

O’Neill has always stressed that this would be a short-term job, despite 67 Hail Hail stating that Celtic may keep the interim boss until the end of the season, and now he has had a chance to respond directly.

Martin O’Neill addresses Chris Sutton comments

Speaking to the media ahead of the Hoops’ Scottish Premiership game against Kilmarnock on Sunday, the 73-year-old was asked about the comments made by his former player.

While the Northern Irishman said he had no fears about his legacy, he was aware that a conclusion needed to be reached sooner rather than later.

He told Celtic TV: “I’ve honestly no concern about a legacy. Never have had. If you’re talking about a legacy then you can talk about Jock Stein but you know that’s fine.

“So I’m not widely worried about a legacy losing some games with a great victory over Rangers and that’s fine.

“But really I’m very, very aware that it is, you know, one game at a time. You win a game, then you may maybe win another then you, and it’s not as if I’m not saying that we’re back to basics again, but you lose the game disappointingly.

“And I think it was the manner in which we conceded the goals, but getting back to your point about the legacy, it genuinely doesn’t worry me one jot. Never has done.”
