Mathias Kvistgaarden is a man that Celtic fans know all too well – despite never playing for the club.

Kvistgaarden came close to joining the Hoops in January, but the Hoops fell short of Brondby’s asking price.

Brendan Rodgers is keen on a new striker this summer and the 22-year-old seems like the player who fits his criteria.

In order to play for Celtic though, you need to be able to rise to the big occasion and the forward did exactly that in the biggest game in Danish football.

Mathias Kvistgaarden strikes as Brondby beat Copenhagen

A tense game at the best of times, the encounter between Copenhagen and Brondby wasn’t without controversy.

Three players were sent off in total – all of them goalkeepers – but the nine-men visitors took the three points.

The Celtic target had a huge role to play in the game and opened the scoring in the 12th minute in bizarre fashion.

A helpless back-pass from a Copenhagen player meant that the forward remained onside and had just the goalkeeper to beat, before rounding him and slotting home into an empty net.

An equaliser from the hosts in the 57th minute looked to ensure the game would end all square but a 92nd penalty from Daniel Wass ensured the three points would be going home with Kvistgaarden and his teammates.

That wouldn’t be the end of the drama though, which included a former Celtic man.

Former Celtic star Mohamed Elyounoussi misses stoppage time penalty for Copenhagen

Remember Mohamed Elyounoussi? The winger spent two seasons on loan at Celtic Park between 2019 and 2021 in Neil Lennon’s second spell at the club.

The winger showed glimpses but not enough for the club to consider signing him permanently.

Now at Copenhagen, Elyounoussi was also involved in the chaos and in the 97th minute, the hosts won a penalty.

It was the 30-year-old who stepped up from 12 yards but his effort was saved. This then caused the big brawl and the game ended in controversial moment.
