Brendan Rodgers has given an insight into his summer 2025 transfer window plans at Celtic.

Rodgers will embark on his fifth transfer window after the end of the current season since his return to Parkhead as manager in 2023.

The summer 2023 window was deemed underwhelming by Rodgers, while January 2024 saw the arrival of Nicolas Kuhn for £2.8m and the loan signing of Adam Idah.

Idah proved to be a tremendous acquisition as he found form at the end of last season to motor Celtic to the Premiership title, as well as scoring the winner in the Scottish Cup final.

Celtic spent around £30m last summer, fuelled by the record exit of Matt O’Riley. And in the recent January 2025 window, the Hoops sold Kyogo while adding Jeffrey Schlupp on loan.

Rodgers teases Celtic’s summer transfer window plans

So what’s in store for this summer’s transfer window? Well, the Celtic manager told reporters at his pre-Kilmarnock press conference that changes in his first-team squad – incomings and outgoings – are needed.

The Northern Irishman explained that he is always looking to improve the squad to keep hunger levels strong and to avoid long-term complacency.

Rodgers said: “It’s all about improvement. I think naturally what you have at our club is a natural slide of players that move out and come in every three or four years.

“It’s the nature of our model here, but it’s also the nature of players being here and maybe either looking to move on or want to come away from the pressure that’s here, because three or four years of it, it’s a lot of pressure.

“But we always have to be ready to replace any players that go. But obviously important for us is improvement.

“We always want to improve the team, improve the hunger in the team. That’s always key. You need the freshness.

“It’s either that or the manager goes. It’s simple, there’s no rocket science in it. You cannot be at a club for a long period of time with the same group of players.

“And likewise, the same group of players need a different voice. But at this moment, it’ll be about improving the squad.

“I think change is needed. I think that’s that freshness, that new energy coming into your squad that alleviates any of that sort of complacency.

“So we will bring players in to challenge the squad and the team for the summer.

“That’s natural at any team. However this team does at the end of the season, come the end, we want to improve it. Because, like I said, if you just sit on that, then the team needs the competition.

“So either way, we will look to improve the squad.”

Who could happen at Celtic this summer?

Well, we know it is extremely likely Rangers-linked Greg Taylor will depart this summer, with the left-back set to run his contract down.

Kieran Tierney will be his direct replacement in the squad having penned a pre-contract arrangement in January to join from Arsenal.

Jeffrey Schlupp is only on loan from Crystal Palace so Rodgers will need to make a decision on whether he wants to pursue a permanent deal for the Ghanian star.

Elsewhere, Nicolas Kuhn has been linked with Newcastle United, however his form has dipped in recent weeks and Chris Sutton thinks his stock has gone down.

Celtic did not replace Kyogo in the winter window, with Mathias Kvistgaarden heavily linked. Could the Danish striker arrive in Glasgow to beef up Celtic’s attack?
