MLS expert says Celtic appointing Wilfried Nancy compares to Rangers bringing in Russell Martin

An MLS expert with experience of playing in Scotland has said that Celtic appointing Wilfried Nancy carries the same risk factor as Russell Martin going to Rangers.

Columbus Crew have said that no approach has been made for Nancy, but there are plenty of reports suggesting that the Frenchman is Glasgow bound.

Nancy looks like an exciting prospect but his lack of experience in European football may feel like a concern for some people.

Any appointment would be a risk, but Colin Miller thinks it would be on a similar level to what went on at Rangers in the summer.

Colin Miller on Celtic appointing Wilfried Nancy

Miller knows the Scottish and US football scenes well, having played and managed in both countries.

He has seen Nancy’s style up close and personal, so knows that it would be an exciting prospect, but could also be one of the biggest risks in the club’s history.

“Listen, this could work out to be a good appointment. But if you ask my personal opinion, I think this is an incredible risk from Celtic,” he told the Daily Record.

Poll: Do you want Wilfried Nancy to become the new Celtic manager?

“Almost as big a risk as Russell Martin was for Rangers.

“For anyone who’s been managing the MLS, then I don’t know if there’s a bigger goldfish bowl you can go to than Glasgow.

I say this with the greatest respect. The man’s been managing at a very high level for a long time and I’m sure he’s a very, very good coach.

“But to deal with the pressure that is at Rangers and Celtic is very, very different from being the manager at Montreal and Columbus Crew.”
