Record Celtic signing Arne Engels made a breakthrough with the Belgium national team in a Nations League win over Israel on Friday night.

The £11m buy from Augsburg came on for goalscorer Youri Tielemans in their 3-1 victory, getting 17 minutes on the pitch.

Engels represented Belgium at every youth age group up to U21 level before getting his first call-up to the senior side in June, without winning a cap.

Tonight he’s made that next step and his involvement with an elite international side bodes well for his potential at Celtic.

It’s very promising that Domenico Tedesco sees Engels as part of his plans moving forward, in a midfield that already includes Kevin de Bruyne, Amadou Onana and Tielemans.

A fantastic week for Arne Engels continues

It’s been a whirlwind seven days for the midfield talent. This time last week he was only just arriving at Celtic Park to put the finishing touches to his Bhoys move after travel delays.

Then he made his Bhoys debut in one of the biggest derbies in world football against Rangers on Sunday.

Tonight will be another very proud moment for the 20-year-old and his family – a real sign that his plan to fully establish himself at the very top level of football is well on course.

Engels in his own words

Earlier this week, the new Celtic Bhoy was asked to describe what he can offer his country, responding: “I am a player who can bring energy to the Red Devils. And the will to win. I am a real winner every day, even during mutual games in training. In addition, I have a nice passing and a good kicking technique, which can be useful in set pieces, if necessary.

“I am also very versatile: I pull my weight everywhere, but I prefer to play in midfield. I am mainly here to learn. I want to deliver quality. To show that I am worth being here.”

Celtic fans are still getting to know the young talent but I have a suspicion it won’t take him too long to become a favourite with the support. Hopefully, we see him make a first start in Scotland at home to Hearts next time out.
