Real Sociedad goalkeeper and Socceroos captain Mat Ryan has been talking up the potential appointment of Harry Kewell to Ange Postecoglou’s coaching staff at Celtic.

Ryan was actually linked with a move to the Bhoys last summer, but Celtic ended up signing Joe Hart, with Ryan moving from Brighton to Spain.

The Kewell to Celtic news is making headlines in Australia. For many of them, they see it as the greatest Australian player of all time linking up with the greatest Australian coach of all time.

Ryan reckons it will be a good move for Celtic and for the reputation of Australia in football, telling The West Australian: “Another well-respected, and deservedly so, name in football linking up there with Ange from what I can see is only going to be a positive. I wish them all the best if that is the case that eventuates that way and they’re working together.

“Hopefully they can just keep growing a strong Australian name or respect in European football or in world football.

“The more respect they get, hopefully it’s more and more opportunities for the Australian stars of tomorrow to get opportunities over in Europe, in the bigger and better leagues and those types of stuff.”

Ultimately, all that matters to Celtic fans is that it is effective for the Bhoys. Ange knows that too. He isn’t making this appointment purely because it has Australian benefits.

If the move goes through, and it’s not official yet, he’s appointing a character he knows that he thinks will work well with this first-team group.

Kewell was an elite player. If you’re below a certain age you might not remember that, but he was. He was even nominated for the Ballon d’Or in 2001.

That doesn’t guarantee him to be a good coach and it hasn’t quite worked out for him as a manager, but having a man of his experience around is likely going to be a benefit to Celtic. I’m very intrigued to hear what Postecoglou has to say about it all.
