Pat Bonner has shared a fascinating insight into how Martin O’Neill motivated Celtic players behind closed doors, and it explains why so many former players still speak so highly of him today.

Speaking before Celtic beat Hearts in the title decider at Parkhead, Bonner revealed how O’Neill approaches the big games and inspires his team.
Bonner told BBC Radio Scotland, “I’ve never been in a dressing with Martin O’Neill as a player, but what I hear is that he says two or three key things to players.
“He manages players in a way that players probably like. If you have a manager that goes on and goes on and goes on and goes on, almost after a while, the message goes out the door.
“And from that perspective, that’s how he manages. He leaves it to his staff to get on and do all the detail and the coaching and all of that type of stuff.
“He, of course, will talk to them, he will give them direction, but he’s not a coach to go down to the pitch and does coaching.
“He might be there, obviously, to keep an eye on things and watch what’s going on, and see players, stand back and see the mentality of the players, and probably has one on ones with him, and so on.
“But he creates the environment, and he’s a leader in that way, and that’s what I think great managers do.”

Bonner’s comments line up with what so many members of that Celtic side have said over the years. O’Neill made players feel confident rather than confused, and that mentality quickly spread throughout the dressing room.
Neil Lennon once said O’Neill “transformed the mentality” at Celtic, while Chris Sutton explained that the manager “treated you like a human being”. Those comments now make even more sense after Bonner’s description of how O’Neill handled players internally.
Rather than trying to control every single detail, O’Neill trusted his staff with coaching while he focused on leadership and mentality. That balance clearly worked.
