Brendan Rodgers’ return to Celtic is just getting better and better.

Sometimes they say you should never go back, but Rodgers is proving otherwise, as he pushes for yet another Treble in the colours of Scotland’s most successful club.

Celtic thrashed St Johnstone on Sunday at Hampden and booked their Scottish Cup final ticket against Jimmy Thelin’s Aberdeen.

With the Premiership title nearly confirmed, just one small push is needed; only Aberdeen stand in Rodgers’ way of total dominance in Scotland once again.

This is Rodgers’ second season in charge of his second spell, and many of the Celtic Park faithful will be hoping that it’s just the start of another spell of trophy after trophy being put on the table.

But the Irishman’s contract expires during the summer of 2026, and there has been a lot of talk around whether or not he will pen a new deal.

Pat Bonner made it clear, whatever happens, there is one road the Celtic manager will never go down again.

Pat Bonner says Brendan Rodgers won’t leave Celtic midway through the season again

Rodgers’ call to leave for Leicester City in 2019 left a bitter taste in many people’s mouths, but thankfully, all is now forgotten.

Bonner made it clear that, whatever happens, Rodgers won’t leave in such a way again, even if he doesn’t sign a new contract.

The legendary goalkeeper explained how it would be ‘really difficult’ for everyone if Rodgers were to go down that route again, as he told BBC Radio Scotland.

“People are talking about it,” said Bonner about Rodgers’ contract. “One more year, is it? ‘150% I will be here next year’. That doesn’t say, ‘I might finish next year’.

“I don’t think he will ever do what he did before by stepping away in the middle of a season. That would be really difficult for everyone concerned, himself included, so I think he will be here next year and he will wait until the end of the season.”

What ‘motivates’ Rodgers to sign a new Celtic contract

Celtic progressed in the Champions League this season, and it was the first real sign in a long time that there is belief things can move forward in Europe.

Bonner touched upon how Europe could be a ‘motivation’ behind Rodgers penning a new contract at Celtic.

But part of that will have to be the powers that be backing the manager in the summer transfer window, because the level of quality in the Champions League is changing.

“I don’t know whether he will sign,” added Bonner.

“Depending on what he can bring to the club player-wise. If he can bring in two or three real quality players in the summer, then I think he is going to be in a position, and the little run in Europe.

“That motivates him. He had a great run this year in Europe. That really motivates him. He wants to be up there. No doubt. He wants to be in Europe competing. That’s what people talk about.”
