Paul McStay’s backing of the Season Ticket Alliance changes the conversation around supporter unrest at Celtic instantly. When somebody like Paul McStay publicly backs supporter concerns, Celtic cannot simply brush the issue aside.
The reason is simple. McStay is not viewed as a divisive figure. He is one of the most respected people associated with the club and somebody who still actively supports Celtic through his ambassadorial role with the Foundation.
That is why his comments about supporter representation carry real weight, especially after revealing he personally spoke to CEO Michael Nicholson before publicly supporting the Alliance.
It will be fronted by Paul McStay…
Paul McStay has legitimised Celtic supporter concerns
McStay made it clear this is not about attacking Celtic. It is about supporters feeling heard after a difficult period between fans and the club.
He explained on the Let me Be Frank podcast, “I met some of the directors at the [Scottish Cup] game on Saturday, and also before I came over from Sydney I had a call with Michael Nicholson.
“Last year the club asked me to be an ambassador for the Foundation and the club in general, anything I can do for the club I will be there, and I relayed that, especially the foundation – so that has not changed.
“I relayed that to Michael and I said ‘I am going to be an ambassador for the Alliance, because I feel passionately about it, I think it’s something that should maybe have happened before, and especially with what has happened last year the supporter’s voices have to be heard’.
“I explained to him that, and he said ‘that is fair enough, it’s your decision’. He just said he wanted ‘unity’ as well. I think when we are unified we are a formidable force and that is when success happens.”
Those are not the words of somebody trying to create division. They are the words of somebody trying to reconnect supporters and club leadership.
Michael Nicholson’s Celtic ‘unity’ message now matters
Nicholson’s response is important because it acknowledged McStay’s position rather than dismissing it.
But if unity is genuinely the objective, Celtic now have to show supporters their concerns are being listened to properly.
McStay has effectively strengthened the Alliance’s credibility overnight because of who he is and how carefully he chose his words. Celtic supporters will now expect the club’s actions to match the language around unity.
