Paulo Bernardo’s brilliant response after he is told ‘you only score great goals’ for Celtic

Paulo Bernardo was brought back into Celtic’s main XI for the win against St Johnstone on Saturday evening.

The 22-year-old started Celtic’s win over Falkirk in the League Cup and played 90 minutes, but Brendan Rodgers had made a lot of changes for that game.

Bernardo rewarded his manager by scoring another brilliant goal in Perth and proved the squad depth Celtic have at their disposal, with Reo Hatate the one sitting on the bench this time around.

When Bernardo moved to Parkhead on a season-long loan deal last summer, he had Hatate, Callum McGregor and Matt O’Riley ahead of him in the pecking order.

Then, during the winter period and especially when Hatate got injured, Bernardo got his chance, scored a few goals, including against Rangers and started to show fans what he was capable of.

Unfortunately for him, he had so many quality players in front of him that he remained the back-up, but that didn’t stop him from showing his quality.

Even the Portuguese star’s volley against Falkirk, which was utter brilliance, was another example of him showcasing his technical quality again.

And when he added another high-class goal to his list at the weekend, you can imagine that he was asked about it in his post-match interview.

Bernardo brilliantly told a reporter that he perhaps needs to start scoring the simple goals now, as he told The Celtic Way.

“You only score great goals, you don’t score tap-ins, do you,” a reporter tells Bernardo.

Bernardo responded by saying: “I have to score tap-ins too. Thank you.”

Will Paulo Bernardo start against Borussia Dortmund?

It wouldn’t be a surprise if Bernardo drops to the bench again for the Champions League clash against Borussia Dortmund, with Hatate coming in, at the end of the day, it makes sense because he is fresh.

McGregor isn’t getting dropped and club-record signing Arne Engels looks as good as anything.

But whatever happens, this Celtic team is flying ahead of that Borussia Dortmund game and the mood has been as good as it has been for a long time.
