‘People go on about’ – Kris Boyd shuts down Derek McInnes’ Rangers claim, with Celtic truth

Another season passes by in Scotland, and it’s the same team on top.

Celtic have won 14 out of the last 15 titles, including four in a row, and you wonder if you can even call it a competition now with Rangers, in fact, you can’t, and the record suggests so.

Those at Ibrox have tried everything, from changing manager after manager, including talk of a potential Rangers takeover from the San Francisco 49ers.

With Celtic now the champions of Scotland, including the Gers finishing second again, the woes of Barry Ferguson’s side are there for all to see.

And it was discussed by the Kilmarnock boss, Derek McInnes, and Sky Sports pundit, Kris Boyd.

Derek McInnes’ spending claim about Rangers as Celtic dominate in Scotland

As mentioned above, with talk of the 49ers coming in at Rangers, their fans are hoping it stops Celtic’s dominance in Scotland.

McInnes mentioned how Celtic have been ‘doing their job right’ because their ‘their recruitment has been so much tighter and better’.

But the former Rangers man also noted how Celtic have got ‘more money’, as an excuse for the opposition’s league failures, as he told Sky Sports Football (11/05/25).

“It depends on how much money is available,” said McInnes. “I still think that Rangers, with the budget that is afforded to the previous managers, should still be winning cups.

“Maybe Celtic are doing their job right because they have got a head start, because they have got a bit more money and because their recruitment has been so much tighter and better. It’s difficult to maybe win a league.

“But Rangers have to try and find a way to compete. They need to use whatever money wisely. I don’t think that has been the case over the last few seasons.

“Normally, the club that spends the most money wins the league, and I think if Rangers are going to come in with the extra investment and get a bit closer to Celtic, then money is going to be a big part of it. But spending it wisely is the bigger part.”

Kris Boyd on Celtic’s smart recruitment

Some pundits think that money is the only reason behind Celtic’s success, and how the champions can spend a record amount on Arne Engels, and their rivals can’t.

But, as crazy as it is, Boyd seems to be the one who is the voice of reason, as he rightly threw McInnes’s money argument out of the window.

Just like Celtic did by selling Matt O’Riley for big money in the summer, they use that money to then invest in the squad. Rinse. Repeat, and rinse repeat.

“Derek makes an interesting point there,” responded Boyd. “Everybody focuses on Celtic and Rangers. The two teams, but Rangers have had the upper hand in that fixture this season, in terms of the league.

“But Rangers’ problems have been against the rest. Rangers should be beating the rest of the teams. There is no getting away with it.

“People go on about ‘Celtic’s spending power’. Celtic have spent the money that other clubs have given them to buy their players.

“Bajrami has come in here for £3.5 million – the recruitment has been really, really bad, but they have spent money.”
