‘Pep Guardiola did it’ – Celtic told what’s ‘very difficult’ with Brendan Rodgers’ contract situation

Celtic have to resolve Brendan Rodgers’ contract as soon as possible, regardless of the outcome.

To be fair, Celtic aren’t the only high-profile club that have found themselves in this situation because Manchester City were in the same boat not so long ago.

During the 2024/25 season, Pep Guardiola’s Manchester City contract was due to expire at the end of that campaign, and there were a lot of rumours and noise around his future.

Whilst Celtic continue to dominate in Scotland, Guardiola’s trophy-laden Manchester City side were actually going through one of their worst periods under their legendary manager, including losing four in a row.

But that’s when the Spanish coach put pen to paper, signed a two-year deal, and is now contracted to the English side until 2027, so will Rodgers follow suit at Celtic?

Brendan Rodgers and Pep Guardiola comparison amid Celtic contract

Everyone is aware of how bad things were for Celtic during the 2025 summer transfer window, so what happens in January? Especially if Rodgers’ future isn’t sorted yet.

Peter Grant discussed the situation on Go Radio, including a disgruntled fan stating that Rodgers can’t be backed properly if he doesn’t sign a new deal himself.

The former Hoops star admitted, just like Guardiola, it’s ‘very, very difficult’ for players wanting to sign knowing that the current manager probably won’t be there for the next campaign.

“We all want your team to be the very best, and that’s what he (Rodgers) wants,” said Grant.

“The way you do that is by having peace with everybody. We know it’s not always possible. They want the best players there that they can afford.

“I am sure Brendan has spoken about that. He knows the parameters that he can get into. He knows what he can spend.

“If Brendan isn’t committing yet, then it’s very, very difficult, no matter who you are. I think Manchester City ended up doing it with Guardiola very quickly. Was it last year? Or the year before? Because he was coming near the end.

“There were a few top players who were saying, ‘well, I am not coming if he’s going to leave.’ There is a very similar situation with Brendan Rodgers.

“Players are thinking, ‘he is going to only be there until the summer time, but I am signing for him. He sold it to me, and then he isn’t going to be there. I will miss that boat. Move on and go somewhere else.’”

Celtic haven’t offered Rodgers a new contract

The issue here is those who sit on the other side of the fence. For Rodgers to sign a new deal, he needs a contract on the table.

Whilst the Irishman has stated he will only sign something if things are right, it has still surprised Go Radio pundit Mark Guidi that Celtic aren’t offering their trophy-laden coach a new deal.

“First of all, I’m really taken aback that they haven’t made him an offer,” said Guidi.

“So, they’ve had discussions, but there’s been nothing put in black and white to Brendan Rodgers, going by what Brendan says there, and I have no reason to doubt that.”
