Celtic’s transfer business has been much maligned by the Parkhead support.
With Celtic having millions of pounds in the bank, there was no real reason not to invest in the first team this past summer.
Brendan Rodgers expressed the need to bring quality to the team as Celtic sold the likes of Nicolas Kuhn and Adam Idah before the start of the season.
With Celtic appearing to make lowball offers for some of their transfer targets this summer, it appears that the club are trying to save money by getting players on the cheap.
So what is Celtic’s budget to sign players? Peter Grant believes that Dermot Desmond has set it and Rodgers knows what he has to work with.

Peter Grant believes Desmond has set Rodgers budget at Celtic
Desmond appears to hold the purse strings at Celtic as the single biggest shareholder at the club.
With the club’s bizarre behaviour over the transfer window being well publicised, Grant says he’s ‘sure’ Desmond has told Rodgers his budget to sign players for Celtic.
Grant told The Go Radio Football Show [53m], “Well, I’m sure Brendan knows what Celtic can afford to pay and what they’re willing to pay.
“I’m sure he sits down with Dermot and says, listen, we can spend five million on a player, we can give them a basic salary, 30,000 or 40,000 pound a week.
“So that’s fine. So you know where you are then. So if you’re going fishing then, you know exactly where you are. I’ve done the exact same at Norwich.
“So you go in and you tell them, what can I pay in wages? That’s what you can pay. What can I pay to get the player? That’s what you can pay. Then it’s simple.”
Celtic’s total 2025 summer transfer spend
Celtic have spent money this summer but, in truth, when fans take into account how much was received for the sale of Nicolas Kuhn, the Hoops are still in the black in terms of net spend.
So here is every player Celtic brought in this summer:
- Kieran Tierney – Arsenal – free
- Isaac English – Greenock Morton – £50k
- Ross Doohan – Aberdeen – free
- Benjamin Nygren – FC Nordsjælland – £2m
- Callum Osmand – Fulham – development fee
- Hayato Inamura – Albirex Niigata – £250k
- Shin Yamada – Kawasaki Frontale – £1.5m
- Jahmai Simpson-Pusey – Manchester City – loan
- Michel-Ange Balikwisha – Royal Antwerp – £5m
- Marcelo Sarrachi – Boca Juniors – loan
- Sebastian Tounekti – Hammarby – £5.2m
- Kelechi Iheanacho – free
A grand total of £14m on 12 players, with four of them not costing the club a penny. Taking into account the sale of Adam Idah as well, Celtic made close to £10m this summer after all transfer business had been concluded.
And looking at the performances on the park, it’s clear that the players brought in are not of the same quality of those who have left over the last 12 months.
